PROJECT INSIGHTS
Education City Stadium, the Diamond in the Desert was originally conceived to be Education City's Sports, Health and Wellness hub and post the 2022 World Cup will revert to this role providing Athletics and field sports facilities to the campus. Already under design prior to Qatar's award of the FIFA world cup the Stadium concept was changed to reflect its new role steepening the seating tiers and rotating the Stadium and its field of play to suit daytime and evening football matches.
TECHNICAL
Bowl Sound System
For Stadium sports the bowl sound system is a key component in the fan experience and must overcome a number of challenging factors to deliver clean, clear and intelligible speech to every seat in the house. For football, the fans are loud, easily exceeding 100 decibels. Whilst the sound system must be loud enough it must also be intelligible allowing commentary and potentially evacuation instructions to be understood; potentially by an audience comprised of diverse native languages. The systems uniformity of coverage will determine if it is too loud for some listeners and too quiet for others, good uniformity allows all audience members to hear at a comfortable level. Distortion caused by comb filtering and other issues inherent in a particular design solution are equally detrimental to sound quality but often more troublesome to alleviate due to the complex interaction of all of the sound system's components in the acoustic space. Patient and detailed design is able to deliver excellent results.
Stadium sound systems are one of the most difficult systems to design requiring a great deal of skill and experience to arrive at good solution. Modeling and auralisation are useful tools to help track down design issues and when models are created honestly and interpreted correctly by the designer they do provide a great deal of insight.
Broadcast
Broadcast coverage of sporting events is of course the major revenue driver for professional sports and as such the requirements for broadcast infrastructure and facilities play a critical role in the success of a stadium or sports venue. Education City Stadium is outfitted with a comprehensive system of tie lines, installed cable infrastructure which can be used to connect visiting camera equipment to outside broadcast vehicles without the need to run long cables throughout the building, a time consuming and often intrusive task. The tie lines cables are broadcast standard and use connections common to all visiting broadcasters. This solution is however limited to currently known technologies and standards and to mitigate against the ever present progress of new developments in technology a conceptually simple yet powerful solution utilising empty pathways is employed. Empty pathways might be considered more of an Architectural solution as they are essentially spaces or pathways along which cables may be rapidly deployed and removed, connecting various pars of the building to mobile outside broadcast units. Conceptually you might consider these as small corridors for cables. The architectural integration of the empty pathways is essential to having a practical and aesthetically acceptable solution, requiring significant coordination to achieve unbroken easy to use cable paths around the building. Once in place these pathways provide excellent future proofing and minimal impact to building operations for even the most extensive overlay events.
Empty Pathways within the Education City Stadium use a combination of cable hooks, accessible trays, cable pass thru's and dedicated tunnels to connect camera positions, media locations and broadcast facilities into one customizable and future proof broadcast connectivity solution.
Large Format Displays & Scoreboards
The Stadium Bowl is equipped with two FIFA compliant large format direct view LED displays able to show scores, match content, instant replays advertising and a wide range of video content. Viewing distances are large and so a correspondingly large pixel pitch could be used making the displays relatively economic. Each public entrance also features a wide banner style large format display for the conveyance of information and advertising messages, these displays are situated with a shorter viewing distance to the public walking into the entrances and consequently use finer pixel pitch than the scoreboards.
Press Conference
The Stadium's Press Conference room facilitates news gathering for ENG broadcasters and the media. Simultaneous interpretation facilities and audio distribution deliver audio in multiple languages to journalists and broadcasters. Dedicated broadcast lighting of the top table ensures excellent image quality of ENG cameras and a large direct view LED screen located behind the top table allows for game clips and video media to be used during press conferences. Broadcast tie lines and empty pathways connect the Press Conference Room to other broadcast locations and to outside broadcast vehicles.
